Daiei Inc.(株式会社ダイエー) is one of Japan's largest supermarket chains. It expanded rapidly but suffered from outstanding debts in the post bubble 1990s and the early part of the 21st century.
It was the owner of the Fukuoka Daiei Hawks until January 27, 2005.
August 20, 2004: According to a story (http://www.iht.com/articles/534794.html) in the International Herald Tribune, Wal-Mart is considering buying a stake in Daiei. Wal-Mart also has a large stake in retailer SEIYU.
