Daimaru - Definition and Overview

Daimaru (大丸) is a corporation that operates department stores throughout Japan. It was founded in Kyoto in 1717.

The main Daimaru department store is located in the Shinsaibashi district of Osaka. Other stores are located in Umeda (Osaka), Yaesu (Tokyo), Kyoto, Kobe, Ashiya, and Sapporo. Branches in Hong Kong were closed during the 1990s. A branches in Melbourne and the Gold Coast, Australia, also closed in 2003 after nearly a decade of low profits.

Daimaru also owns a supermarket chain called Daimaru Peacock.
