Dallas County is a county located in the state of Iowa. As of 2000, the population is 40,750. Its county seat is Adel, Iowa6. It was named for George M. Dallas, Vice President of the United States of America under James K. Polk.
Geography
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,533 km² (592 mi²). 1,519 km² (586 mi²) of it is land and 14 km² (5 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.89% water.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 40,750 people, 15,584 households, and 11,173 families residing in the county. The population density is 27/km² (70/mi²). There are 16,529 housing units at an average density of 11/km² (28/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 94.75% White, 0.74% Black or African American, 0.15% Native American, 0.69% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 2.79% from other races, and 0.84% from two or more races. 5.40% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 15,584 households out of which 37.20% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 60.60% are married couples living together, 8.00% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.30% are non-families. 23.60% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.20% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.59 and the average family size is 3.08.
In the county the population is spread out with 28.20% under the age of 18, 6.90% from 18 to 24, 32.10% from 25 to 44, 21.60% from 45 to 64, and 11.10% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 97.70 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 93.80 males.
