Dance Dance Revolution is the first game in the Dance Dance Revolution series of music video games. It was released in the arcades by Konami in September 1998. It is typically referred to as Dance Dance Revolution 1stMIX, or DDR 1st Mix, to avoid confusion with the series itself. It contained eleven songs.
The interface of DDR 1st Mix is a jukebox-like menu of CD's which represent the available songs. You could modify how the arrow arrangement and how they appear on the screen with various step codes when you selected a song. You also have to use step codes to change difficulties from Basic to Another or Maniac.
How To Play
The general premise of DDR is to move your feet to a set pattern. One player can play using one dance pad (Single play style), Two players can play using one dance pad each (Versus play style), or One player can play using both dance pads (Double play style).
A player must step to the beat, matching the beat to the arrows presented to them on screen by stepping on arrows on a metal-and-plexiglass dance stage. Depending on the timing of each step, the step is scored "PERFECT," "GREAT," "GOOD," "BOO" or "MISS." A health bar is on the screen, and starts half-way at the beginning of the routine. PERFECT and GREAT steps increase the health bar until it is full. BOO and MISS steps diminish it. GOOD steps have no effect either way. If a player accumulates too many BOOs or MISSes in rapid succession, and the health bar fully diminishes, then they fail the song and the game ends.
A player may play anywhere from three to seven songs (not including extra stages), depending on how many the arcade owner sets the machine to play each game. At the end of each song, the player sees their accumulated points, bonus points, and how many of each kind of step they stepped. They also get a letter grade, ranging from E (only seen in two player modes when one player fails but the other passes) to SS (all steps PERFECT), solely determined by the kind of steps they make. At the end of the game, they get a cumulative score based on the last three songs they played.
The scoring system is unchanged from previous versions of Dance Dance Revolution.
Dancing Characters
3D-rendered dancing characters appear in the background of each song. You have to use a step code as you first press START when you insert your coins to select a character.
Dance Dance Revolution 1.5
Dance Dance Revolution 1.5 is a reissue of DDR 1st Mix released on November 21, 1998. It is similar to the original, but has some slight rule changes, including the fact that you must finish the next-to-last song with a full life bar in order to make the songs TRIP MACHINE and PARANOiA appear for the final song.
DDR US 1st Mix
A version of DDR was released in 1999 in North America. It is commonly referred to as DDR US 1st Mix. It had 13 songs from DDR 1st Mix and DDR 2nd Mix, and had the same rules as DDR 1st Mix.
Home versions
The home version of Dance Dance Revolution was released in Japan on April 10, 1999, for the Sony PlayStation (or PSone) video game console. It featured 15 songs: ten from the arcade version, and five from the arcade version of DDR 2nd Mix. Only Basic difficulty was available.
Soundtrack
The original Dance Dance Revolution arcade game did not have its own soundtrack. Its songs were included on the soundtrack to DDR 2nd Mix.
