Dangerous Liaisons is a 1988 film directed by Stephen Frears, based upon a play by Christopher Hampton which in turn is based on the 18th century novel Les Liaisons dangereuses by Pierre Choderlos de Laclos. The film starred Glenn Close, John Malkovich, Michelle Pfeiffer, Swoosie Kurtz, Keanu Reeves, Mildred Natwick, Uma Thurman, and Peter Capaldi.
The novel is entirely composed in letters from the main characters to each other, revealing their innermost thoughts; it can't be easy to adapt such a book for the theater but still the plot of the play follows that of the novel quite well. One difference is that because you know Valmont's thoughts about himself he is more sympathic in the book, although still a very cruel person; in the movie he seems to have a rather violent nature.
A more modern version of this movie was made in 1999 with the title Cruel Intentions. Swoosie Kurtz is starring in both versions.
