Danny Chan - Definition

Danny Chan Bak-Keung (陳百強) (September 7, 1958 - October 25, 1993) was a Cantopop singer in Hong Kong. He started his music career at TVB through a singing competition hosted by the TV station in 1977 and song composition competition in 1978. His career peaked in the early 1980s when he joined a music group called Warners and sang a number of hit songs such as 'Will Always Be Loving You' (偏偏喜欢你), 'Take Care of Yourself Tonight' (今宵多珍重), 'No' (不). His popularity declined in the late 1980s and remained largely unchanged throughout the early 90s. His style of singing is that of romantic ballads which would ideally appeal to the Hong Kong female fan base but the changing trend of demanding fast songs to dance along to in the Cantopop genre has meant that Chan's songs would fade away eventually.

Death and Speculation

There was speculation in the late 1980s that Chan suffered from alcoholism as it was generally perceived in the press that his career lagged behind that of Alan Tam and Leslie Cheung, especially the latter as a major part of Chan's fan base is teenage girls, overlapping with that of Cheung, while Tam appealed to an older audience.

On May 18, 1992, Chan fell unconscious and was admitted to Queen Mary Hospital in Hong Kong. He never regained consciousness and died one year later, aged 35. Immediately after he fell unconscious until his death, there was much speculation over Chan's private life, and claims of drug use, suicide, and alcoholism were made.

TraHK Theme Song

In 1999, Chan's song Ripples (漣漪) became popular once again as the theme song of the Hong Kong Government's sale of units of the Tracker Fund of Hong Kong (TraHK).
