Darren Aronofsky - Definition and Overview

Darren Aronofsky (born February 12, 1969) is a film director.

He was born in Brooklyn, New York. After high school, Darren went to Harvard University to study film, live action as well as animation. Five years after university, in February 1996 he began creating the concept for his first feature film π, released in 1998. After that he directed the well-received Requiem for a Dream in 2000. Since then his career has stumbled, in 2001 his project The Fountain was days away from the start of filming when star Brad Pitt pulled out. He was then due in 2002 to direct the relaunch of the Batman film franchise but was replaced by Christopher Nolan. He was then attached to a film version of the comic book series, Watchmen, penned by David Hayter but gave up, when an opportunity to continue his work on The Fountain arrived (Hugh Jackman took interest in the main part). The film is now in filming stage, and will star Hugh Jackman, Rachel Weisz and Ellen Burstyn.

Aronofsky's trademark is a technique known as hip hop montage. This technique shows images or actions in fast motion, accompanied by sound effects, trying to simulate a certain action, e.g. taking drugs.
