 Dartmouth Review - Definition

The Dartmouth Review is a right-wing independent bi-weekly newspaper at Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire (U.S.). Founded in 1980 (with the backing of the Institute for Educational Affairs' Collegiate Network) as a right-wing "secession" from the college's official newspaperThe Dartmouth — it spawned a movement of similar right-wing independent newpapers on college campuses. Past staffers include Dinesh D'Souza, Hugo Restall, James Panero and Laura Ingraham. As of 2004, it claims 10,000 off-campus subscribers.

The Review routinely refers to gays as "sodomites"; in the early 1980s its staffers took sledgehammers to shanties that had been erected on campus as part of an anti-apartheid demonstration. Its provocative style in its early years garnered national attention.

In recent years, however, the paper is generally seen as not equal to its glory days. A February 17, 2003 article in The Nation quotes early Dartmouth Review star Dinesh D'Souza as saying that the current Review's "impact on campus is debatable... The quality is uneven."
