David Hempleman-Adams - Definition and Overview

David Hempleman-Adams was an English pilot who became the first person to cross the Atlantic Ocean in an open wicker basket hot air balloon on September 22, 2003. The journey was from New Brunswick, Canada to Ireland.

He is also famous as the first man in history to reach the Geographic and Magnetic North and South Poles as well as climb the highest peaks in all seven continents. He is a record breaking explorer.

David Hempleman-Adams, was born in Swindon , Wiltshire in 1956.

In 1984, he successfully completed a solo expedition to the Magnetic North Pole without dogs, snow mobiles or air supplies, he was the first to do this in 1984. Also he led the first team in 1992 to walk unsupported to the North Geomagnetic Pole.

His achievments include seven Arctic expeditions and being only the third Briton to have climbed all the seven continental summits. Again yet another solo journey was made on January 5th 1996 when he became the first Briton to do this alone and unsupported to the South Pole.

On February 19th 1996 he sailed to the South Magnetic Pole, becoming the first person to do so in the same year.

On May 15th 1996, he led a team of novices, to ski to the Magnetic North Pole, gaining some notable firsts. In one year he had become the only person to ever reach both North and South Magnetic Poles. In 2000 he joined with Norwegian, Rune Gjeldnes, to attempt to reach the Geographical North Pole unsupported.

It was the third attempt by David, the first attempt was in September, 2002 the second was in July, 2003.
