 David Milgaard - Definition

David Milgaard (born 1954) is a Canadian who was wrongfully convicted for the murder and rape of nursing assistant Gail Miller.

Milgaard was sentenced to life in prison, on January 31, 1970, at the age of 16 — exactly one year after Miller's murder. His conviction was reversed in 1992 by the Supreme Court of Canada and a new trial was ordered. He was finally cleared of the crime on July 18, 1997, by DNA evidence. On July 25 1997, Larry Fisher was arrested for the murder and rape of Ms. Miller. On May 17 1999, Milgaard was compensated $ 10 million by the Canadian government.

On September 30, 2003, an open ended inquiry was started into the investigation of Milgaard's wrongful conviction, headed by Justice Edward P. MacCallum. He has appointed Douglas Hodson as commission counsel.

The Tragically Hip's song "Wheat Kings" (from their 1993 album Fully Completely) is about Milgaard.
