Detroit Diesel - Definition and Overview

Detroit Diesel Corporation is a subsidiary of DaimlerChrysler. It produces Diesel engines for commercial and automobile use. The company was founded by General Motors at the beginning of World War II to provide Diesel engines for military use. After the war, this GM Diesel Division was merged with Detroit Diesel as a division of GM. The business was later merged with GM's Allison Transmission group. In 1988, GM and Penske Corporation spun Detroit Diesel off as a separate company, listing it with the NYSE in 1993 as a public company. DaimlerChrysler purchased the company in 2000, merging it with their MTU-Friedrichshafen engine business.
