Deweyism - Definition and Overview

Deweyism is the system of education expounded by John Dewey in his 1897 book, My Pedagogic Creed. It emphasized social interaction and group learning over individual education, and became the dominant model in American education. (Dewey himself was an avowed socialist.)

An important component of Deweyism was the "look-say" method of learning to read. It replaced the method of phonics previously used. The look-say method was the source of some controversy; it has been argued that it causes dyslexia or worse, illiteracy.
