Diocese of Salisbury - Definition

The Diocese of Salisbury forms part of the Province of Canterbury in England.

The Diocese of Sherborne, created in 705 was the parent diocese. The cathedral city was moved to Salisbury (New Sarum), Sarum (Old Sarum) and finally to Salisbury in 1227.

It has parishes that cover most of the counties of Wiltshire and Dorset.

The diocese is divided into four Archdeaconries:

• the Archdeaconry of Dorset
  • includes the Deaneries of Blackmore Vale, Milton & Blandford, Poole, Purbeck, Wimborne
• the Archdeaconry of Sarum
  • includes the Deaneries of Alderbury, Chalke, Salisbury and Stonehenge
• the Archdeaconry of Sherborne
  • includes the Deaneries of Dorchester, Lyme Bay, Sherborne and Weymouth
• the Archdeaconry of Wilts
  • includes the Deaneries of Bradford, Calne, Devizes, Heytesbury, Marlborough and Pewsey
