Diocese of Winchester - Definition and Overview

The Diocese of Winchester forms part of the Province of Canterbury in England.

Dating back to 670 it is one of the oldest and largest of the dioceses in the Church of England.

It has parishes in:

• the county of Hampshire
• the city of Southampton
• the Isle of Wight
• eastern Dorset
• the Channel Islands (transferred from the diocese of Coutances during the reign of King Henry VII of England)

The diocese is divided into two Archdeaconries:

• the Archdeaconry of Winchester
  • includes Deaneries of Andover, Whitchurch, Basingstoke, Odiham, Winchester, Alresford and Alton
• the Archdeaconry of Bournemouth
  • includes Deaneries of Romsey, Eastleigh, Southampton, Lyndhurst, Christchurch and Bournemouth.

The Deaneries of Guernsey and Jersey are not part of an Archdeaconry.
