Dirge of Cerebus: Final Fantasy VII is an upcoming Japanese console video game developed by Square Enix for the Sony PlayStation 2. It is a sequel to the highly popular 1997 game, Final Fantasy VII, and is part of the "Compilation of Final Fantasy VII" series, which also includes the games Before Crisis: Final Fantasy VII and Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII, as well as the CG movie Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children.
According to preview sites, the game will feature Vincent Valentine, one of the original characters from Final Fantasy VII in the lead role. This game is to take place three years after the events of Final Fantasy VII and one year following the events of Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children. It will take place in an area beneath Midgar that was discovered following the events depicted during the conclusion of Final Fantasy VII. It is also said to involve the Turks, who also played a major role in Before Crisis: Final Fantasy VII.
As this game has not been released as of early 2005, many details are pure speculation at this point, including its gameplay and genre. Many assumed that it would be an Action/Adventure game along the lines of Konami's Devil May Cry, but designer Tetsuya Nomura has remained silent on the matter, and has suggested that many fans will be surprised. The game is due to be released in Japan sometime in 2005, with a North American release probably following at some undisclosed time in the future.
