Discovery Zone (or "DZ") was a chain of elaborate indoor mazes designed for young kids that was founded by Ronald Matsch in 1989. It contained slides, climbing structures and pits full of plastic balls.
Children 6-10 years old were encouraged to have birthday parties there. The Discovery Zone existed from 1989 to 1999. On March 25-26, 1996, in Wilmington, Delaware, the Discovery Zone filed a bankruptcy at debts of up to $366.2 million. Chuck E. Cheese bought Discovery Zone in 1999, and the chain no longer exists.
