Donald Lee Nickles (born December 6 1948) was a United States Senator from Oklahoma and a member of the Republican Party. He was born and educated in Oklahoma. He served in the United States National Guard from 1970 until 1976. He then became a successful businessman, but soon entered politics. Nickles was a state senator from 1978 until his election to the United States Senate at the unusually young age of 32 in 1980. Nickles was reelected in 1986, 1992 and 1998 and was the senior senator of Oklahoma from 1994 to 2004. He announced his retirement on October 7, 2003. Republican Tom Coburn won the election to succeed him.
