Doncaster Cup - Definition

The Doncaster Cup, known at times in the past as the Doncaster Gold Cup, is a Group 2 United Kingdom flat racing horse race for three year old and above thoroughbred horses run over a distance of 2 miles 2 furlongs at Doncaster Racecourse during August. (worth £100,000 in 2004).

First run in 1766, it is the oldest continuing regulated horse race in the world, though not since its early years has it overshadowed the St. Leger Stakes, now considered Doncaster's leading race. Together with the 2-mile Lady O' Goodwood Cup and 2-1/2-mile Ascot Gold Cup, the Doncaster Cup is part of Britain's Stayers' Triple Crown for horses capable of running longer distances. Only six horses have ever swept the series, one of them twice.

In recent years it has been sponsored by the Great North Eastern Railway.
