Donyi-Polo is a religion in Arunachal Pradesh, followed by the tribes of Arunachal Pradesh. The religion has no written scriptures and has survived the passage of time with traditions and hymns passed on to the next generations orally. Believers worship the sun and the moon, besides other things like bamboo and bushes found in the jungles. They also believe the Abo-Teni, the primal man who came from Tibet. Until recently, a vast majority in this tiny frontier state with a population of 1.1 million people were Animist. Due to the intervention of the Christian missionaries, about 5 percent of the population has been converted to other religions, especially Christianity, thus lowering the Animist population considerably to a little more than half the people practising the primitive faith.
