Doritos Doritos

Doritos - Definition and Overview

Doritos is a brand of corn (maize) chips produced since the 1970s by the Frito-Lay company.

Originally produced and marketed only as tortilla chips and sold in red bags, over the years Doritos have produced new flavors and corresponding different bag colors.

The Doritos brand is also known for its marketing campaigns, which have included many television commercials and product placement in movies, such as Wayne's World and other productions. Doritos are sold in many countries worldwide.

The brand name seems to be loosely derived from the Spanish word oro for gold and the diminuitive suffix -ito meaning small (therefore orito without the D would mean little gold). It also rhymes with Frito, which is the Spanish word for fried, so the term fits in with the larger corporate theme.
