Dorothy Gale - Definition and Overview

Dorothy Gale is the protagonist of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz and many of its sequels. An orphan raised by her aunt and uncle in the gray, featureless landscape of a Kansas farm, she is swept by a cyclone to the Land of Oz. Like Alice, she enters a lively alternative world filled with talking creatures.

In most of the Oz books Dorthy is the main hero or protagonist of the stories, often alongside her best friend and ruler of Oz, Ozma.

Dorothy's surname, Gale, is first mentioned in Ozma of Oz.

In the 1939 movie, Dorothy was played by Judy Garland.
