An ultramarathon is a running event longer than the marathon length of 42.195 km (26.219 miles).
Common ultramarathon distances are 50 and 100 miles or 50 and 100 kilometres. A double marathon is 84 km (52 miles). Other events are time-based, where competitors are given a set amount of time, often twelve or twenty-four hours, to complete as many laps as possible of a short course.
Many ultramarathons are run on dirt roads or mountain paths, though paved road and track courses do exist. They usually have aid stations every five to fifteen km apart where runners can replenish food and drink supplies, or take a short break.
