Douglas County is a county located in the state of Nebraska. As of 2000, the population is 463,585. Its county seat is Omaha6.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 880 km² (340 mi²). 857 km² (331 mi²) of it is land and 22 km² (9 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 2.54% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 463,585 people, 182,194 households, and 115,146 families residing in the county. The population density is 541/km² (1,401/mi²). There are 192,672 housing units at an average density of 225/km² (582/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 80.96% White, 11.50% Black or African American, 0.61% Native American, 1.71% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 3.40% from other races, and 1.76% from two or more races. 6.67% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 182,194 households out of which 32.00% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 47.50% are married couples living together, 12.10% have a female householder with no husband present, and 36.80% are non-families. 29.80% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.70% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.48 and the average family size is 3.12.

In the county the population is spread out with 26.60% under the age of 18, 10.30% from 18 to 24, 31.20% from 25 to 44, 21.00% from 45 to 64, and 11.00% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 95.70 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 92.90 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $43,209, and the median income for a family is $54,651. Males have a median income of $36,577 versus $27,265 for females. The per capita income for the county is $22,879. 9.80% of the population and 6.70% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 13.00% of those under the age of 18 and 7.20% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
