Doves Doves

Doves - Definition and Overview

Doves is a British indie rock band from Manchester, England. The band is known for its large, epic sound, and has been compared with contemporaries such as Radiohead as well as classic Manchester bands such as The Stone Roses, New Order and The Smiths.

The three members of Doves are brothers Jez Williams (guitar) and Andy Williams (drums), and Jimi Goodwin (vocals and bass), who met at school when they were 15. They formed a Madchester-influenced dance collective called Sub Sub, which had moderate success in the early 1990s, including the hit single Ain't No Love (Ain't No Use), but the trio gradually moved in a more rock direction. This transition may have been hastened by the destruction of their studio in a fire. The band regrouped, changed their name, and three EPs followed in 1998 and 1999, which established the group's new sound and met with a warm critical response.

Their debut album Lost Souls (2000) was received with rapturous critical acclaim, and was nominated for the Mercury Music Prize, which they lost to fellow Mancunian Badly Drawn Boy, for whom they had previously acted as an occasional backing band. Their second album The Last Broadcast was released two years later, reached #1 in the UK album chart and was also nominated for the Mercury prize. This record contained the epic track "There Goes the Fear", which reached #3 in the UK singles chart despite only being released for one day before it was deleted. in 2003, they released a b-sides compilation, Lost Sides, and a DVD. Their next record, Some Cities, is cited to be released on February 21, 2005 in the UK and on March 1 in the USA. The band have announced several dates for their upcoming tour, which starts in February in Britain: Liverpool, Newcastle, Belfast, Bristol, London and Cardiff.
