Dragon Warrior IV is the fourth installment in the Dragon Warrior series of role playing games, released in the United States in 1992. It begins the Tenku no Shiro or Castle in the sky trilogy.

The game is divided into five chapters, with each introducing a new concept and character(s) to the plot. In the fifth chapter, the player takes control of the legendary hero and must save the world from the return of the Ruler of Evil. The Hero first seeks out the seven characters from the first four chapters, then seeks out all of the Zenethian items: Sword, Armor, Helmet and Shield. The Hero finally goes to Zenethia were he then can travel to the Final confrontation with Necrosaro, the arch villain in this game.

Dragon Warrior IV introduces a brand new concept in RPGs: Character A.I. You get NPCs (Non playable characters) all through the first four chapters, but they don't have the A.I.- they simply attack however they choose, they don't raise levels, they don't carry items, and they only wear the weapons and armor they had when you picked them up. As bad as it might sound, it's actually not bad at all. In the fifth chapter, though, you control only the Hero's actions directly while using a Tactical menu--including the options Offensive, Defensive, Save MP, Use No MP, Normal, and Try Out--for the other characters. As you progress through chapter five using each tactic, your characters get smarter at that tactic.

Many consider Dragon Warrior IV to be the best RPG on the NES and one of the best games, if not the best, on the NES.
