Duke of Hereford - Definition

The title of Duke of Hereford was created in 1397 for Henry Bolingbroke, Earl of Derby, eldest son of John of Gaunt, due to his support for the King in his struggle with their uncle Thomas of Woodstock. It merged in the crown on Henry's accession to the throne two years later, and has never since been created again.
