Dune: House Atreides - Definition

House Atreides is the first book in a prequel trilogy to the Dune series, set before the events of Frank Herbert's original works. The trilogy was co-authored by Frank's son Brian Herbert and science fiction author Kevin J. Anderson.

Plot Synopsis

Taking place forty years before Dune, the novel centers around Leto Atreides (the father of Paul from the original book) as a young man, and features other familiar characters including Baron Harkonnen and Duncan Idaho. It introduces House Vernius, the rulers of Ix, who are the victims of a conspiracy by Emperor Elrood IX to introduce an artificial substitute for melange. Meanwhile, the planetologist Pardot Kynes is on Harkonnen-controlled Arrakis to study the spice, while Elrood's son Shaddam and Hasimir Fenring are plotting to seize control of the Imperium.
