Dzyarzhynsk Dzyarzhynsk

Dzyarzhynsk - Definition and Overview

Dzyarzhynsk (Belarusian: Дзяржы́нск) is a city in the Stolbtsy district of Belarus. The city has an ancient history.

It was known before 1932 as Kojdanow of Wilno guberniya of Russian Empire, and still earlier as Kojdanowo townlet. Nowdays in Belarusian, the name Kojdanava (Belarusian: Ко́йданава) is becoming popular again, but the official name remains unchanged, as Felix Dzerzhinsky, the communist NKVD founder, is still considered a national hero in Lukashenka's Belarus. In Russian language, it is synonymous with Dzerzhinsk (Дзержи́нск), another namesake of Iron Felix.

The highest point of Belarus, Dzyarzhynskaya Hara, is only several kilometers away from Dzyarzhynsk.

The town is a birth place of Adam Hlobus, a contemporary writer and well-known publisher.
