E (New York City Subway) - Definition and Overview

The E-8 Avenue Local is part of the IND division of the New York Subway. Operating from Jamaica, Queens to the World Trade Center station at the World Trade Center site in Manhattan, the E is the Queens Boulevard Express in Queens but runs local in Manhattan with the C.

The E (and the F) is very crowded in rush hours (second most crowded line in the system), as it is used heavily by Queens commuters going to and from work in Manhattan. The E provides a direct connection to JFK Airport at the Sutphin Blvd. station via AirTrain, a fast, but extra fare rail line, with stops at most terminals.

History

Service on the E was affected by the September 11, 2001 attacks because its terminal is at the northeastern corner of the WTC site. Service for the line was changed so that it went to Euclid Av. in Brooklyn as Fulton Street Local — the first time it went to the borough since 1976. Service was restored after the World Trade Center terminus was reopened a few months after the attacks.

The E train used to follow the F train to 179 St-Hillside Av. in Queens, but in 1988, the new Archer Av. Subway opened and two tracks known as the "Van Wyck Stub" (so called because they are under Van Wyck Blvd. — now the Van Wyck Expressway), which were constantly in subway extension plans dating back to 1929, were connected to the upper level of this two level, four track subway. The lower level is used for J/Z service.
