Eastern Passage, Nova Scotia - Definition

Eastern Passage is fishing town on Nova Scotia's Eastern Coast. It is a suburb of Halifax, Nova Scotia, and lies along the Atlantic Ocean. Historically, fishing was the main source of income for the town, but now many of its inhabitants commute to Halifax.

History

The first European settlers who moved there were mainly German, French, Irish and English. These ethnic groups are what continue to make up the population of Eastern Passage. Prior to the European settlers however, Eastern Passage was Mi'kmaq territory for thousands of years. Europeans began arriving in 1700 and the Mi'kmaq, who lived throughout the land, were moved mainly to McNab's island.

In 1996, Fisherman's Cove, which is a replica of an old fishing village, opened as a tourist attraction.
