 Edwin Astley - Definition 

Edwin Astley (1922-1998), generally known as Ted, was an English composer, best known for his television themes.

He was born in Warwickshire, and served in the Second World War. He performed for the troops, playing saxophone and clarinet. His song, "I Never Could Tell" was recorded by both Vera Lynn and Richard Tauber. His own band, the Ted Astley Orchestra, became well known in the north of England. He continued to write songs for performers such as Ann Shelton.

His television themes of the 1950s and 1960s included Robin Hood, The Buccaneers, Danger Man, The Saint and Department S. He also wrote film themes. His elder daughter married Pete Townshend of the Who, with whom he worked professionally, and another of his daughters is singer-songwriter, Virginia Astley.
