Diario El Comercio is the largest daily newspaper of Peru, with a circulation of over 120,000. El Comercio is based in Lima and was founded in 1839, making it the oldest privately-owned newspaper in the country. Its slogan, "Independencia y Veracidad" ("Independence and Truth") was adopted to reflect a focus on objectivity and journalistic ethics, although the military took control of production during the 1970s. El Comercio is controlled by shareholders from the MirĂ³ Quesada family.
In November 2000, the paper published several editorials criticizing President Alberto K. Fujimori after his abrupt resignation, marking the return of freedom of the press in Peru.
