El Jadida - Definition and Overview

El Jadida is a port city on the Atlantic coast of Morocco, in the province of El Jadida. It is the port for Marrakech, which it is 110 miles nearly due north of. From the sea, El Jadida has a very un-Moorish appearance; it has massive Portuguese walls of hewn stone. The city exports beans, almonds, maize, chick-peas, wool, hides, wax, and eggs, and imports cotton goods, sugar, tea, rice, etc.

El Jadida was siezed in 1502 by the Portuguese, who abandoned it to the Moors in 1769. It was previously known as Mazagan. The population was 119,803 as of 1994.
