Elaine Showalter was born on January 21, 1941, in Boston, Massachussets, USA.
Her Ph.D. thesis (1969) is named The Double Critical Standard: Criticism of Women Writers in England, 1845-1880 and was later turned into the book A Literature of Their Own: British Women Novelists from Brontë to Lessing. Her writings are regarded as the founding stones of gynocritics, a form of literary criticism concerned about women writers and literature by women.
