Elisha Otis - Definition and Overview

Elisha Graves Otis (August 3, 1811–April 8, 1861) invented a safety device in 1852 to prevent hoisting machinery from falling. From there, he went on to invent the first passenger elevator, without which skyscrapers would be far less practical.
