Elitegroup Computer Systems or ECS for short is a Taiwan-based electronics firm. It is among the biggest PC motherboard manufacturers in the world, with production reaching 24 million units in 2002. A lot of these motherboards are made for OEM customers and land in computers assembled and sold by IBM, Compaq and the like of brand name IT vendors. ECS has a reputation for making low-cost, mediocre performance but reliable motherboards. Its main competitor used to be Micro-Star International.
The company has since then concentrated on broadening its product range. Now, the company is also making its mark in the design and manufacture of notebooks, Desknotes, portable desktop computer systems and multimedia products.
Founded in 1987, ECS is headquartered in Taiwan with operations in North America, Europe and the Pacific Rim. In June 2003, ECS was selected for two years in a row for Business Week Magazine's exclusive Information Technology 100 list.
