Elmhurst, Queens, New York - Definition and Overview

Elmhurst is a neighborhood in Queens, one of the Five Boroughs of New York City.

It was originally named Newtown after a nearby creek of the same name. Later, a real estate developer changed the name to its present name. Houses of worship include The Reformed Church of Newtown, established in 1731; and St. James Episcopal Church.

The residents of Elmhurst are mainly Chinese, Taiwanese, Korean, Mexican and other Hispanic immigrants.

There is a large Chinese supermarket called Hong Kong Supermarket, as many Asian people gather in the area. The area is bordered by Jackson Heights, where many Indian, Bangladeshi built Little India near to Roosevelt Avenue and Broadway, and large Hispanic communities co-exist.
