The Emergency Locator Transmitter or ELT, commonly referred to as a black box, is a radio transmitter installed in an aircraft that will send out an emergency signal when either activated by the pilor or if the plane crashes. The crash sensor is designed to activate the device if it detects high-level acceleration or deceleration. However, in some cases ELTs have been known to activate after a hard landing. The ELT transmits its emergency signal on the VHF emergency frequency 121.5 MHz and on the UHF emergency frequency 243.0 MHz.
