The Enfield Poltergeist was a period of supposed poltergeist activity between August 1977 and September 1978, with an added outburst in August 1980. The activity occured at 284 Green Street, Enfield, North London, a council house rented by Margaret Hodgson, a divorcee with four kids. Margaret was unemployed, and the family lived on a nominal state benefit. Therefore, to satisfy her (and that of the investigators, Guy Lyon Playfair and Maurice Grosse) drive for attention, she and her kids faked supposed poltergeist activity. To further financially exploit their tales, one of the investigators (Guy Lyon Playfair) wrote a book about their "experiences" named "This house is haunted", which billed itself as "even more terrifying than Borley Rectory!".

One of the children (Janet) confessed to investigator Anita Gregory that they had invented to occurences, and later, another of the children, fourteen-year old Margaret, confessed to a reporter from the News of the World (London) that they had been responsible for the activities.

Although the family later retracted these statements in a distressed state, it is generally considered as nothing but a menopausal bint's final cry for help and/or attention.

The family still live at the aforementioned address. Some of them died according to a woman's magazine who exposed the family in the 1990s. The front door is apparently directly opposite to a primary school.
