Wales, with Flintshire highlighted, including Maelor Saesneg to the south
Maelor Saesneg (Welsh, "English Maelor"), sometimes called "Flintshire Detached", is an area of Wales along the eastern border which has traditionally formed an exclave of Flintshire. Its administrative centre was in Overton. Since 1974 the traditional arrangement has not been reflected in the structure of local government (see the article on Counties of Wales); the area is now administered by the borough of Wrexham.
To the west, across the River Dee, lies another area known as Maelor Gymraeg, meaning "Welsh Maelor". This area was formerly in Denbighshire.
The names and separate governance of the two parts of Maelor goes back to at least 1202.
