Eqn - Definition and Overview

Part of the troff suite of Unix document layout tools, eqn is a preprocessor that formats equations for printing. A similar program, neqn, accepted the same input as eqn, but produced output tuned to look better in nroff.

The input language used by eqn allowed you to write math in much the same way you would speak it, and is very similar to the language used by TeX. For example, here's how some of the examples from [1] (http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Help:Formula) would be written in eqn:

TeXeqnformula
a^2$a sup 2$<math>a^2<math>
\sum_{k=1}^N k^2 $sum from k = 1 to n { k sup 2 } $ <math>\sum_{k=1}^N k^2<math>

Example Usage of Eqn

busynessgirl: @sumidiot Assuming that you want to learn how to code in webwork and can live without wysiwyg Eqn editor. #mathchat
justice_nd: Q2': Some systems (@wileyplus) are not forgiving on answer order for questions with multiple answers (solve quadratic Eqn). #mathchat
Claireandahalf: @siobhan_mcg oh but you never know when someone will approach you and ask "what the Eqn of that line that goes though this point?"
