Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae is a parasitic bacterium. The disease it causes in animals is called erysipelas. This disease is most common in pigs and turkeys, but also occurs in other birds, sheep, fish, and reptiles. An infection of E. rhusiopathiae in humans is known as erysipeloid. The human disease called erysipelas is a different disease caused by a different bacterium.
