Ewa, Hawaii - Definition and Overview

For the district in Nauru, see Ewa (Nauru).

Ewa is a town on the island of Oahu, located approximately twenty miles from Honolulu, in the State of Hawaii. In the late 1800s to early 1900s, Ewa boasted one of the largest population centers on the island with industry focused on sugar cane production. Ewa Mill was a major employer that set up various villages within Ewa. Today, sugar cane production has declined, and Ewa has transformed itself into a typical suburban community.

"Ewa" is also known as a directional term on Oahu, referring to the direction at which Ewa town is located, generally westward if centered in Honolulu. Its opposite is "Diamond Head", which is located roughly east of downtown Honolulu.
