The term extra has many meanings:

• in drama, an extra is a character who has no role or purpose other than to appear in the background (for example, in an audience scene or a busy street scene). Extras often require little to no acting experience, and are hired en masse with little formality. Extras are usually paid but at low rates. War films and epic films often employ extras in large numbers: some movies have featured hundreds or even thousands of paid extras. The silent film The Extra Girl (1923) portrays a small-town girl who comes to Hollywood and becomes an extra in her attempt to achieve stardom.
• in journalism, an extra is a special printing of a newspaper containing important news that has occurred since the last scheduled print run. In modern times, with the availability of radio, television, and the Internet, extra editions are not very common. The term has bled into other forms of journalism. There is even an United States tabloid television program called Extra.
• in the sport of cricket, an extra is a run scored by a means other than a batsman hitting the ball. See extra (cricket)
• In aerobatics, an Extra is an aircraft manufactured by Extra Flugzeugbau in Germany (for example, the Extra 300/200). This company was established by Walter Extra, an aerobatic pilot, to design and develop his own aerobatic aircraft.
• Extra is the name of a brand of chewing gum.
