The FAMAS is the standard assault rifle of the French military.

It has a bullpup configuration, weighs 3.6 kg, and uses the 5.56 x 45 mm NATO cartridge. It is fully ambidextrous. The F2 version (produced since 1994) is designed to accommodate STANAG magazine as used by the M16.

The name stands for Fusil d'Assaut de la Manufacture d'Armes de Saint-Etienne - manufactured by the Saint Étienne arms factory. The factory is a member of the French government-owned GIAT Industries complex.

The FAMAS is affectionately known as Clairon ("bugle", because of its shape) amongst French troops, and is known to be reliable.
