The Fire Department, City of New York (FDNY) has the responsibility of protecting the New York City's five boroughs from fires and fire hazards, as well as preventing disasters like The Station nightclub fire in nearby Rhode Island, and the trampling deaths at an overcrowded building in Chicago. The FDNY has 11,000 personnel, all of whom must go through tough physical training upon enlistment. They (along with the NYPD) have been celebrated as America's new heroes since the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, when 343 members of the department perished in the catastrophic collapse of the World Trade Center. Along with the firefighting portion of the FDNY's job they also have the job along with the local hospitals of running the cities Emergency medical Services with their paramedics and EMT's. they have ambulances and cars all throughout the city saving the people of the city from their illnesses or injuries.
