FTP server - Definition and Overview

The term FTP server can mean one of two things:

  1. a computer responsible for serving any kind of files, via the FTP protocol to ftp clients which can also web browsers;
  2. a software program that implements the FTP protocol and is working as a daemon serving any kind of files.

You can connect to an FTP server using an FTP client and some web browsers.

There are numerous versions of FTP server software. They include:
