Fakaofo - Definition and Overview

Fakaofo, formerly known as the Bowditch Island, is a group of coral islets within Tokelau in the south Pacific Ocean. It covers almost 3 km2, and is composed of an atoll surrounding a central lagoon, which itself covers some 45 km2.

The main settlement on the atoll is located on Fakaofo Island, towards the western of the atoll. To the west of it is the relatively large Fenua Fala Island. Other islets in the group include Teafua, Nukumatau, Nukulakia, Fenua Loa, Saumatafanga, Motu Akea, Matangi, Lalo, and Mulifenua. The atoll is located at 171° 15' West, 9° 25' South.
