Fan art is a type of artwork that is based on a person or item that the artist did not create. Some fan art revolves around books, a popular type being the Harry Potter books by J.K. Rowling. Other fan art creators enjoy illustrating scenes and characters from movies, comics, or nearly anything else.
Fan art is, strictly speaking, a violation of the original creators' copyright, but since it is usually intended as a tribute the copyright holders tend to tolerate it as long as the fan does not try to make money out of it.
