Fanta is a soft drink manufactured by the Coca-Cola company. It was invented by Max Keith in Germany in 1940 when World War II made it difficult to get the Coca-Cola syrup to Nazi Germany. Fanta was originally made from byproducts of cheese and jam production. The name comes from the German word for imagination (Fantasie or Phantasie), because the inventors thought that imagination was needed to taste oranges from the strange mix. After World War II, Fanta was picked up by the main company and in 1960 they bought the trademark. Fanta Orange is the most popular Fanta flavor, but there are several other citrus and fruit flavors such as apple, strawberry, pineapple and grape. A diet edition of Fanta Orange also exists in some countries.
Fanta Orange is more popular in Europe than the United States, and the products are formulated differently, with the European version having real orange juice.
There are over 70 flavours world-wide, however most of them are only available locally, in some countries. For example, in Romania, there is "Fanta Shokata", based on the traditional Romanian drink "Socată" made from elderflower.
In 2004 the Coca-Cola company relabeled what had been known as Minute Maid in the United States and began an aggressive advertising campaign to expand the US market for Fanta, especially among younger consumers.
